World Heavy Weight Champion, Anthony Joshua has earned praises on the social media for prostrating to greet Nigeria’s President Mohammadu Buhari in London. Joshua who met the President on the sideline of the first African-UK Investment Summit, is seen in photographs that have been making waves in the media prostrating fully on the floor in front of a seated Buhari.

The gesture is a cultural way of showing respect to the elderly especially in the Western and Mid Western parts of Nigeria. Joshua has his roots in the Yoruba tribe of Western Nigeria. The gesture has been praised in the social media as show of humility by the world champion. Some also commented that Joshua display was a pointer to the fact that he had a good upbringing.

Joshua himself writing on his Instagram page urged his followers not to read any political meaning into what he has done as he was merely following tradition in showing respect to the elderly. He told President Buhari at the meeting he was ever ready to “stand up for Nigeria” whenever it was needed.
