Seun Kuti mounted the keyboard in Rovigo in March 1998 at 16 about seven months after his father’s death.
Barely seven months after his father’s death Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, was touring Italy at the age of 16. He played in four cities with the Egypt 80 Band. AfroLife Magazine caught up with the lad and the band during their performance in Rovigo in the Veneto Region of Italy. When he mounted the stage the crowd surged forward to catch a glimpse of the lad.
Seun Kuti was full of “yabis” for the then military government of the Mephistophelian Sani Abacha
When the crowd settled, he gave directives in the manner his late father used signs to guide the Egypt 80. He mounted the keyboard – his style of singing and dancing was reminiscent of his father. He shared jokes with the audience in pidgin English and did a number C.O.P. (country of pains), an original of Fela which derided military rule. “How Zombie go be oga?” queried Seun.
