Rome witnesses a huge surge in tourists in flow in spite of the heat
As we get into mid-Summer, the sub-tropical soaring temperatures make comfortable days and nights far-fetched. The heat is unrelenting and making simple chores undoable. Europe and some parts of the world have been experiencing extreme heat waves this summer. Some European countries like Italy, Spain and Greece sent out alerts and travel advisory early July to warn locals and tourists about the hottest cities in those countries.
Rome, which happens to be one of the hottest cities in Italy and known as the eternal city was described by a CNN reporter as “The Inferno City.” The blistering and deadly heatwaves tagged “Cerberus” has been predicted by meteorologists to hit 45 degrees Celsius. It got to 42.9 in mid-July. Some other cities in Italy also experience the same hot unbearable weather. Europe recorded its hottest-ever temperature of 48.8 degree Celsius in Syracuse this summer. Palermo airport was shut for some time due to the hot weather and opened later. The extreme heatwaves make vegetation highly flammable, and wildfires are also aided by boisterous winds. There were reports of heat strokes killing people in some places.
Greece has been battling with a lot of wildfires resulting from the excessive heat. It also lost two water bomber pilots from the Airforce who crashed after they dropped water to wildfires on the island of Evia. Many states in the US are also recording extreme temperatures. California was reported to have the hottest temperature in 120 years. The earth is 2.5 degrees hotter in Europe. Climate activists say human activities or degradation has warmed the earth by 1.2 degrees.
So how do you cope when you have a balmy body with beads of perspiration on your brows all day and getting a good night’s rest becomes a task?
Here are a few tips on how to beat the heat.
*Stock up on water. Water is your best friend this season. Do not leave home without a bottle of water and refill as much as you can. Stay hydrated.
* Eat lots of fruit. The summer fruits are in season, eat fruits like apples, watermelon, pineapples, oranges, peaches, and all other watery fruits. They help boost your energy. You may also give yourself a treat of ice-cream also known as gelato, you’ll scream for more but don’t over-indulge yourself.
* Wear light clothing. Clothing made of cotton or linen helps your body breathe and get enough fresh air. Wear sandals or open-toed shoes. Use cotton materials for bedding and pillows for a comfortable sleep.
*Get good ventilators. Fans or air conditioning units help to alleviate the heat.
* Keep windows open at night and early morning but close at noon or as soon as the sun reaches the windowsill. Go out before the sun is hot and stay away from the sun as much as possible.
*Going for a walk or work? Bring a hat or cap and don’t forget sunglasses too. A good sunscreen will do you a world of good.
Summer is a time for holidays, choose a cool, nice place for your getaway. A seaside or the mountain would do for cooler and airy weather. No plans for holidays, you could go around your town or city when the sun goes down. You could also go to nearby sea or swimming pool, otherwise take a cool refreshing bath at home when the heat becomes unbearable. You could also go on a road trip with family or friends to get your mind off the heat after all it is summer.
Even with the soaring temperatures, Italy is experiencing a surge in tourists visiting the country. This is breaking the records of tourists’ visit even before the pandemic, with most of the visitors from America and Asia. So don’t let the sweltering weather hinder you from moving around in the boot shaped country.
