Before now immigrants could be detained at the facilities for weeks, months or a year at most. Under the new measures, more deportation camps are to be built in remote parts of Italy. Prime Minister Meloni said those who relied on traffickers to break Italian law would be detained and deported.
The far right politician rode to power on the back of the immigration rhetorics with a vows to put a stop to illegal immigration. So far she hasn’t deliver on this promise as over 130,000 have landed through the Mediterranean corridor alone this year, doubling the total figure of 2022.
