Rather than continue to share Nigeria’s wealth among state governors who continue to under perform, the time has come to put these monies in healthcare, training and education
For the third time since the outbreak of the Coronavirus (COVID – 19) pandemic, Nigeria’s President Mohammadu Buhari has addressed the nation. The highlights of the President’s address include:

The easing of the lockdown on Lagos State from May 4.
The easing of the lockdown on Ogun State from May 4.
The easing of the lockdown on the Federal Capital Territory from May 4.
The lockdown of Kano State with immediate effect.
The imposition of curfew on Lagos, Ogun and the Federal Capital Territory from May 4 between 8pm – 6am.

As Coronavirus cases continue a steady rise across the nation, President Buhari again missed the opportunity to make a case for testing for the Coronavirus. Testing has been neither here nor there in the nation. And testing is the key to defeating this virus. The government is not keen on a homegrown remedy to the situation. A country like Senegal is already doing aggressive testing with its own developed test kits. Where are those Nigerian Universities which charge astronomical tuitions? Why is Buhari not looking inward at a time nations are isolating themselves from others? The President made allusion to vaccine, why is he not talking about Nigeria owned vaccine being developed?

The President also missed the opportunity to lift the mood of the nation by not addressing the poor healthcare system of the nation. Nations are already talking about the next pandemic outbreak and making contingencies plans, why is Nigeria not addressing its decayed healthcare system? Why is the president not talking of investment in medical research, training of more doctors and health workers? Ghana just realised from this pandemic that they have a failed healthcare system, and President Nana Akufo-Addo just announced the building and equipping about 100 hospitals across the nation.

Rather than continue to share Nigeria’s wealth among state governors who continue to under perform, the time has come to put these monies in healthcare, training and education. Buhari has the opportunity to make amends and address this issue of our time head on.
