In Nigeria’s commercial hub of Lagos, Jane Michael Ekanem is living her dream of being at the top her game
She’s a fashion designer with a creative touch that has attracted the attention of the media.
The buzz in the media was generated for her by the gorgeous Kimono tailored piece she created. The international acclaimed magazine Essence had her Kimono featured in a recent edition. This was a a surprise because the magazine is not known to write about unheard of designers like Ekanem, doing her thing in a far away corner in Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria.
The icing on this tale is that one of the most celebrated black woman in the world right now Serena Williams, the best tennis player to ever grace the planet, modelled Ekanem’s creation for Essence. And wait for it, Serena Williams was graceful as ever in the Kimono on the cover of the magazine.
An elated Ekanem says, “no matter who you are and where you are, when your time is here, your universe will come for you. Keep at what you are doing. Do good relentlessly. I am just that young black girl who is trying to keep the dreams alive. And I have never doubted my journey even though sometimes I got angry and impatient. My life is a work in progress and I will trust the process.”
