Paola Egeonu is of Nigerian parentage and doing us proud in Italy
Paola Ogechi Egonu, the Nigerian-Italian volleyball champion was one of the athletes that carried the Olympics flag at the Tokyo opening ceremony.

The 22 year old athlete born of Nigerian parents in Cittadella, province of Padova, Italy has been playing competitively for Club Italia, AGIL Novara and presently plays for Imoco Volley, Conegliano.

Paola who plays for Italian Women’s Volleyball team has represented the country in World championship, European Championship and FIVB world Grand Prix among others.

The 6feet 4inches player could not contain her emotions when informed by the President of the Italian Olympic Committee, Giovanni Malago that she would be the flag bearer for Italy.

She has now accomplished that feat today, making it a first in the history of Italian Olympics. She was awarded the prize for Woman of the Year 2019 by the national newspaper La Republbica.
