Joel Obi has spent most of his professional career playing in Italy
Former Super Eagles midfielder Joel Obi has been racially abused in Italy. Obi who plays for the Serie B side Chievo Verona was racially abused by an opposing player Michele Marconi in Pisa on Tuesday during a league match there.

Chievo Verona in a statement said Obi was “the object of an infamous and disgraceful phrase that has nothing to do with the most basic values of sport, ethics and respect.” The club said Pisa player Michele Marconi used the phrase “the slave revolt” towards Obi in the first half of the 2-2 draw.

The statement said further that Chievo, ”regrets that a phrase heard by most on the pitch was not followed by any disciplinary action: neither by the referee, nor the assistant or fourth official, nor the federation delegate.”

Pisa Football Club and Michele Marconi have both denied the accusation. Obi has 17 caps playing for the Super Eagles. He has spent most of his career in Italy, playing for Inter Milan, Parma and Torino.
