After the rumour mill had its day speculating about the appointment of Mr Ibrahim Gambari as the new chief of staff to Nigeria’s President Mohammadu Buhari, the government has now confirmed that the 75-year-old former diplomat is new chief of staff at Aso Rock Villa.

Confirming the appointment on the sideline of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting in Abuja, was the secretary to the government Mr Boss Mustapha. Earlier in the day, Mr Gambari had arrived the Presidential Villa further giving credence that he had been appointed to the office.

Mr Gambari, who served as External Affairs Minister when Buhari was military ruler between 1983 – 1985, replaces Abba Kyari, who died in April as a result of complications from the COVID – 19. He hails from Kwara State.

Speaking to the media shortly after Mustapha made the announcement, Gambari said though he would not be directly reporting to the nation but pointed out the President needed his loyalty. “I think he needs my loyalty, competence and support,” and stressed that he was ready “to serve the president to the best of my ability.”
